Sony caught with pants down
The craziness with the Sony DRM infested CDs just keeps getting more and more crazy. First of all the patch that Sony released did something very interesting. It allows any webpage the infected pc visits to run code. Yes I know very cute.
You can see a picture here that shows the spread of Sony's software.
Now if all this wasn't bad enough already, people are digging into the contents of the CDs and are finding that the DRM is shipping with LGPL software hidden behind .DAT files. You can read all about that on the link I provided. You would think that since Sony has taken such a strong stance against copyright infringement they would be more careful who they license to develop code. Hopefully someone who has contributed code to lame (one of the open source projects who's license is not being complied with) sues the pants of Sony. I doubt it will happen, but I can dream.
The Freedom to Tinker people are doing a very good job of covering this mess, so check there for a more in depth look at everything that has happened.
So Sony I am officially giving you a single digit salute, get your act together!
"CodeSupport remains on your system after you leave Sony�s site, and it is marked as safe for scripting, so any Web page can ask CodeSupport to do things. One thing CodeSupport can be told to do is download and install code from an Internet site.

Eyes on the Senate

[Downhill Battle][] recently had a [campaign][] to get as many showings of the famous civil rights documentary "Eyes on the Prize" going as possible because the film is not allowed to be distributed due to the creators losing their license on certain clips in the film. At first DB distributed the video via blogtorrent. After about two days that got pulled due to legal threats, but many showings still went on all over the country. In a possitive turn of events DB is [reporting][]

If the bill really does get introduced I hope everyone spreads the word, I know I will do my best to tell my friends and call my senators. Our history should not be owned and if the restrictive copyright system we have put in place is burying our past something must be done!

Wow, in a stunning bout of stupidity [Tecmo][] is [suing][] [their][] [customers][]. Before everyone comments in chorus like good little Americans that piracy is bad, they are not being sued for piracy. They all went out and bought Tecmo's product. What they did was extend the time of enjoyment by modifying the game to add new content or changing textures on the models. The thing that gets me is that the IP people not only argue that when I download a mp3 its [theft][] but if I buy the product I don't have the [right][] to play with it like actual property. IP has become some sort of super property, it now has the protections of actual property but consumers have none of the rights. Its great. Here is a great [comment][] on slashdot:
>And for the game companies: attack your customers at your peril... We don't care about IP, we don't care whether you are too puritanical for nude skins, or whatever. A new game is a toy to us that will be used as we see fit. If you want to clamp down, many people simply won't buy from you. I sure as hell won't. And furthermore this makes me feel like I have made the right decision in avoiding the console market altogether.
So in conclusion, Tecmo has now been added to my list of companies I hate. Good game Tecmo, Good game.
